Osun people on Sunday night, decided to forget about the stories of ritual killing, fuel scarcity, half salaries, workers’ strike, and hunger coming out of their state.

They trooped to the Freedom Park in Osogbo and other places of worship to usher in year 2018 with prayers.

The event at the Freedom Park was special because that was where the Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola ushered in the New Year alongside residents of the state.

You would think all residents of the state hate him so much right now but the atmosphere at the park showed nothing of such.

Then came the symbolic 11:59PM moment when the Osun people were left awestruck with beautiful fireworks to usher in 2018.

Another memorable moment was when pop artistes, Reminisce, and Klever Jay treated fun seekers to different renditions of their hit songs.

Poverty feels better when hunger is taken care of but the reality here is that after the party, most of these people are back to fuel queues and some to the hunger they suffered through the out-gone year.

Considering the economy of the state, do you think this ‘party’ was unnecessary? Could the money spent on the event have been put to better use?

A former Head of Service in Osun state, Dr Akinwusi believes it was a total waste of money.

“This Christmas and New Year that you are celebrating, a lot of workers did not receive their salaries for the period and if you know how much they spent on that their crossover thing.

“Not only that, look at the stupid decorations they have made all over the state. If they are spending almost 150 to 200 million Naira to erect stupid things, it is an act of insensitivity and lack of respect for people in the state,” he told Bounce News.

In case you are also irritated by Ogbeni Aregbesola’s party, the governor has promised that the display of fireworks to usher in the new year would continue even after his tenure ends in November 2018.

In his message to the residents of the state, Governor Aregbesola wants Nigerians to be productive in the new year to live above poverty line and improve the economy.

He encouraged people to perform their civic responsibility to government and support government's policies and programmes.
