The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that transgenders will no longer be tagged as mentally ill.

The term was changed in the organization’s mental disorders chapter of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) catalog.

The update will take effect from January 2022.

WHO expects the change to improve social acceptance among transgender people.

Clinical psychologist, Toyin Abimbola points out that another manual used in Nigeria by psychologists and psychiatrists, the Diagnostic Statistical Manual(DSM), has already declared that transgenders are not mentally ill.

This comes in a country where gays, lesbians and transgenders face up to 14 years in prison for their sexuality.

"Nigerians use the DSM, which is also used by the Americans, this manual declared that transgenders are not mentally ill in January 2016, after extensive researches.

Even though some research claim that being gay, lesbian or transgender is genetic, if there is no proof of this in court, the person can still go to jail in Nigeria." she told Bounce News.

"Most of the people I have actually seen, that are lesbians, the main reason they indulge in lesbianism is due to heart break, they say that they have been heart broken, so they will stick with their own gender", she added.

I cannot say they are  genetically wired" Toyin smiled.
