APC Convention: Zoning Crisis Hits South-West
Barely 72 hours to the national convention of the All Progressives Congress, fresh crisis is brewing in the party's South-West caucus over the zoning of positions assigned to the region.
Some party chieftains are kicking against the choice of Pius Akinyelure as the party’s National Vice-Chairman (South West).
Akinyelure, who is a protégé of the national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, is seeking to retain his position in the NWC.
The leaders rejection of Akinyelure is based on the fact that he and Niyi Adebayo, a former governor of Ekiti State, who is succeeding Segun Oni as the party’s National Deputy Chairman are from the same zone in the South-West.
There are six states in South West namely: Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos and Ogun.
The states are further micro-zoned into three; Ondo/Ekiti, one zone; Lagos/Ogun, one zone; Osun/Oyo, another zone.
While Adebayo is from Ekiti, Akinyelure is from Ondo.
Many party leaders and members believe this is wrong because Ekiti and Ondo is one zone and two key positions in the NWC cannot come from one zone.
It was gathered that Governor Ibikunke Amosun of Ogun State and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo are marshaling forces against Akinyelure.
Some of the party delegates from Lagos State who spoke with Bounce News stated that they are facing tremendous pressure from high quarters from within and outside the state over the choice of Akinyelure.
“Right now, the South West is not settled over Akinyelure’s ambition to retain his position, a delegate told our correspondent on Wednesday.
“Akinyelure is from Ondo State while Adebayo is from Ekiti State that is one zone. If a single zone gets two key positions, what will be the fate of the other two zones? he asked.
“That is one riddle leaders of the South-West are still struggling to resolve before the convention on Saturday."
Another delegate who spoke on condition of anonymity said the crisis would be resolved.
"We are brothers and so we can’t afford to go to the convention divided.
He said leaders of the party from the zone are working on a Unity List that will satisfy all interest groups.
