APC Convention: Buhari, Governors In Last Minute Troubleshooting
Ahead of the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), governors elected under the party’s platform will meet on Wednesday to agree and come out with a unity list before the party's convention on June 23.
It was gathered that the governors would present a list of consensus candidates for the various positions in the party's National Working Committee (NWC) to President Muhammadu Buhari after their meeting.
A top party source, who confirmed Wednesday’s meeting of the APC governors, said the meeting would be hosted by the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Rochas Okorocha, at the Imo State Government Lodge, Asokoro in Abuja.
The main item on the troubleshooting agenda is the attempt to put together a unity list that would accommodate diverse interests of stakeholders.
The essence of the unity list was to minimize possible conflict at the convention.
According to the source, who spoke in confidence, the governors are unhappy with the discordant tunes in some zones over some candidates.
Bounce News gathered that the governor’s meeting became necessary following the discovery that some leading members of the party were working on different agenda, which might lead to either a walkout by the aggrieved members or total parallel National Convention.
It was further gathered that those pushing for the unity list were doing it to route for the chairmanship candidature of a former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole.
Checks by Bounce News revealed that while the President and some national leaders have opted for Oshiomhole , some governors and party chieftains have been fingered in the aspiration of both ex-Governor Clement Ebri and ex-Governor Oserheimen Osunbor.
The party leaders on the side of Oshiomhole are still in shock that Ebri and Osunbor have thrown their hats into the ring despite the President’s anointing of the former labour leader.
The feelers from the North-East, which is the stronghold of the President, are also not good on the choice of National Secretary.
The contestants for the office are the incumbent, Mai Mala Buni (Yobe); Kashim Imam (Borno); Buhari’s ardent supporters, Waziri Bulama; and Dr. Haruna Yerima.
Yobe Governor Ibrahim Gaidam is insisting on the retention of Buni but some strategists of the President are opposed to him.
As at Tuesday, all the North-East governors and APC leaders in Taraba State have built a consensus on Buni based on the persuasion of Gaidam.
However, members of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) and some presidential strategists are pushing for Bulama in order to enable the President to have a firm control of the party ahead of 2019.
The party also appears to be running into troubled waters concerning positions zoned to the South-East.
While chieftains of the party from the zone at a meeting at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, endorsed the trio of Senator Osita Izunaso, George Muoghalu and Emmanuel Eneukwu for national organising secretary, national auditor and national vice chairman (South East), respectively, new contenders have been propped up by some powerful elements with the support of the Presidency.
The Chairman of the National Convention Committee, Governor Abubakar Badaru, is said to have proposed that governors and party leaders should meet at the zonal level to arrive at a consensus on candidates before Wednesday’s meeting of the governors.
