Everyday is for the thief and one day for the owner, so goes a popular saying.

Godswill Udu, a man in his late 30s narrowly escaped death from the hands of an angry mob at Ogbala village in Ebonyi local government area of Ebonyi State.

Bounce News gathered that he was caught by one Fidelis Nweru when he attempted to steal yam from his (Fidelis) barn.

Fidelis disclosed that he suspected Godswill was up to something when he was moving round his barn on the excuse that he was looking for his fowl.

According to him, on several occasions, residents of the area had lamented losing their hens to thieves, until that fateful day.

“He came to my barn that he was looking for his fowl, but I ignored him because I know such thing was not there.

“He went round the barn pretending he was looking for his fowl but I discovered he could not find anything.

“Because I have had similar experiences, I pretended I want to see my neighbor close to me to inquire something from him.

“It was when I decided to enter my room to collect something that I heard the noise from the door leading to the barn, when I came out, I caught him red handed.

“That was when I confided in my neighbor that the man has stolen my yam. My neighbour now alerted some youths who came and gave him the beating of his life.

“Since it has been a repeated incident, angry youths in the area immediately pounced on him and beat him up.

“If not for the intervention of some elders, they threatened they would naked him,” Fidelis narrated.

On interrogation, Udu, who said he did not know what came over him, stated it was the first day he stole yam from the barn.

He blamed the devil and begged that he should be allowed to go, and that he would not steal again.

“Please, I do not want to die. I do not know how it happened, and this is the first time I am stealing. I will not do it again,” he appealed.
