The World Cup is not a child’s play and Nigeria Amputees football team are being taught that reality in Mexico at the ongoing Amputee Football World Cup.

After losing 6-0 to Brazil in their opening group game, the 'Special Eagles' of Nigeria were on Monday night beaten 3-0 by defending champions, Russia, in their second group game of the ongoing Mexico 2018 Amputees Football World Cup.

In the game played at the Lomas Verdes Centre, San Juan,  goals by Igor, Adam Mesiev and Dmitri Udalov gave Russia their second straight win at the tournament having also beaten El-Salvador in their own group opener.

Sweden international journalist, Stefan Lovgren who has been supporting the Nigeria Amputees through a Swedish charity with his sister, Jenny, says of the Nigeria game against Russia:

“A much improved performance from our guys today against the current World Champions Russia. Losing 0-3 in the end, but with chances to score. Imagine, a group of guys with no support, who train on a dirt patch outside the Lagos stadium — when they can get bus fare to get there — matching up against a team that has a semi-professional league and full government backing. We are still in it, too. Tomorrow’s match against El Salvador will be the decider. They’re also a big hit with the locals.” he said.

In other fixtures, Angola, African champions and finalists at the last World Cup, defeated Spain through Celestino Elias lone goal, while Kenya beat the USA by 2-1. Liberia however lost to former champions, Turkey.
