The political atmosphere in Ondo State has become tense while politicians are now sleeping with their two eyes, wide-open.

Preliminary activities towards the 2019 general elections seem to be gradually turning the state into a battleground as many political gladiators have already drawn a battle line.

On Saturday, the campaign team of the senator representing Ondo North, Professor Ajayi Borrofice was allegedly attacked by hoodlums in Owo, the hometown of the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

A close source within the campaign team revealed that the senator narrowly escaped the attack while some of his followers were not that lucky.

"We were in Owo to canvass for votes against the forthcoming APC primaries but to our surprise, we were ambushed by political thugs.

"If not for the quick intervention of the DSS and policemen that followed us, the senator would have been assassinated. Some of us were brutally injured in the attack.”

The senator, who issued a statement through his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi however believed that the attack was orchestrated by the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

"It is a known fact that the attack on me was carried out by Governor Akeredolu as a way of intimidating and scare me out of the contest. It was a clear case of attempted assassination which I escaped by providence," he stated.

Refuting the claim, the Ondo state commissioner for information and orientation, Yemi Olowolabi described the statement as frivolous and a blatant lie, saying Akeredolu, who is a man of peace has no business with his campaign.

Also confirming the attack, the spokesman of the state police command, Femi Joseph said police have commenced investigation into the matter.

The attack is coming three days after an aspirant to the Federal House of Representatives, Olayato Aribo was also attacked by some unidentified hoodlums while his campaign vehicle was vandalized and burnt.

Stakeholders in the state opine that if nothing is urgently done, the frosty relationship between the senator and the state governor will set the state on fire, which will ultimately consume the party before the next election.
