African Championship: Nigerian Wrestlers Battle for Glory in Morocco
The wrestlers selected to represent Nigeria at the Africa Wrestling Championships (AWC) taking place in Marrakech in Morocco are set to begin their chase for medals in the Northern African country.
The African Championship is scheduled to hold from 26th April to 1st May, 2017.
No fewer than 20 wrestlers will flying Nigeria’s flag in Morocco.
The seven male wrestlers are African Champions; Amas Daniel (65kg) and Soso Tamarau (97 kg), Melvin Bibo (86kg), Welson Ebikewenimo (55kg), Firstman victor (61kg), Ogbonna John (70kg) as well as Apala Opukiri (74kg).
All Africa Games Gold medalist, Nworie Emmanuel and four other Greco Roman wrestlers namely Okeke Tochukwu, Dick Enienibodi, Nathaniel Samuel and Perefegha Kiribein are also part of the contingent to Morocco.
The Female squad is made up of four Olympians; Mercy Genesis (48kg), Odunayo Adekuoroye (55kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg) and Blessing Oborududu (63kg) as well as new comers like Makanjuola Bisola (60kg), Samuel Bose (53kg), Kemeasuodei dressman (69kg) and Gofit Winnie (75kg).
According to Daniel Igali, who is the NWF president, the wrestlers were picked from the Governor Seriake Dickson classics held in Yenegoa last March.
He thereafter commended the Bayelsa state government led by Seriake Dickson and the minister of sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung for coming to the rescue of the wrestlers.
