The number of guns brought out of homes in Nigerian states each time there is an amnesty call makes me wonder if anyone is preparing for war.

There is an amnesty programme in Sokoto and more arms are being recovered.

Over the last 24 months, at least 948 guns have been recovered by the Police Command in Sokoto State.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Murtala Mani, told reporters on Wednesday that the recovered and surrendered weapons, include: AK47, double and single barrel and locally fabricated guns with 1,200 ammunition.

Some of the guns were surrendered during the amnesty initiative aimed at discouraging restiveness and criminal activities.

Guns were also recovered during the course of fire exchange between criminals in the state and the men of the command.

The police boss further said that some armed men voluntarily surrendered their weapons in recognition of the importance of amnesty initiative.

Mr Mani said measures had been put in place to sanction all manufacturers of locally made weapons.

He highlighted that for the relative peace in Sokoto to be sustained, the public would have to report any suspicious movement or character to the police.
