5 Times Nigeria Lost 'Woefully' In Football Competition Finals
Getting to the final of any competition is often seen as a testament to how good a team is.
However, when such teams are ‘scandalously’ beaten at the final hurdle, it leaves much to be desired.
Nigeria though seen as a superpower in African football with glimpses of glory on the global stage.
Unfortunately, the Green and White have over the years found some of its national teams on the wrong side of events especially on football fields.
Bounce Sports serves FIVE unforgettable times when Nigeria lost quite ‘woefully’ in a football final.
FIFA U17 World Cup final (2001)
France 3-0 Nigeria
Nigeria till date remains the most successful team as far as playing in the cadet World Cup is concerned.
With five titles to her name, Nigeria is better ranked than other soccer nations like Brazil and Argentina.
However, at the 2001 edition played in Trinidad and Tobago, that class of Eaglets were anything but Golden as they were torn apart 3-0 in that game.
Sinama Pongolle, Le Tallec and Piètre all scored a goal each as the French team crushed Nigeria to win the title that year.
1984 AFCON Final
Cameroon 3-1 Nigeria
After conquering on home soil four years earlier, the Super Eagles were eyeing a second African title.
Having muscled their way to the final, expectations were pardonably high that the Henry Nwosu, Late Stephen Keshi and Late Muda Lawal et al will finish tops in Abidjan.
That unfortunately was not the case even though the final was marred with controversies.
It was the indomitable Lions that carried the day 3-1; marking the first of three times that they will go on to beat Nigeria in the AFCON final.
WAFU Final 2017
Ghana 4-1 Nigeria
One of the biggest rivalries in African and World football is that of Ghana and Nigeria. Apart from Jollof Rice the next bone of contention is on the field of play.
Games between the West African brothers are always keenly contested. Even ceremonial matches are used to settle scores.
It was in this light that many were expecting another classic game when it happened that both teams will be playing in the 2017 WAFU Cup final.
With the home-based Eagles already beaten the Black Stars 2-0 in the group phase, it was not out of place to place a bet on them in the final.
But like a pack of cards, the Eagles had their wings clipped and they were roundly beaten by the Ghana team 4-1 on the fateful Sunday night of September 24, 2017.
1995 African U-17 Championship Final
The 1995 African U-17 Championship, was the first U-17 football competition organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The tournament took place in Mali.
It was not surprising that Ghana and Nigeria were the countries playing in the final as both teams boast of sufficient football talent.
The Golden Eaglets won all their group games en-route qualifying for the final just like the Black Starlet.
However, in the final game played on Children's Day of 1995, the Eaglets like the children they were caved in and lost 3-1.
CHAN 2018 Final
Morocco 4-0 Nigeria
For the home-based Super Eagles, there was no hiding place for them in the 2018 African Nations Championship, CHAN final.
Playing against a rampant and free-scoring Moroccan team, the Eagles were blown apart by their North African opponents last Sunday in Casablanca.
It was the first time Nigeria will be making it to the CHAN final and while that was worth celebrating; the scandalous loss has watered down their achievement.
But will we ever learn from our bitter lessons?
