5 Nigerian Celebrities Who Are Polytechnic Graduates
Last week, Nigerians woke up to news that the Higher National Diploma (HND) had been scrapped.
Polytechnics would now offer only the National Diploma (ND) certificate, while those who seek higher qualification would proceed to the proximate university to the polytechnic in question.
It was quite the shakeup especially given the discrimination against polytechnic graduates. But the question remains, will the discrimination against polytechnic graduates ever end?
Despite the attempt by previous administrations to bridge the gap between university and polytechnic graduates, the bias just never seems to disappear especially in the corporate sector.
This is not to say, though, that some Nigerians haven't gone ahead to succeed in their chosen fields. Inspite of the perceived discrimination, many Nigerians are thriving with their polytechnic certificate and on that note, we present 5 Nigerian celebrities who are thriving with a polytechnic certificate.
1. 2Face Idibia
Unarguably one of Nigeria's biggest musicians, Innocent Idibia aka 2Face attended the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu where he obtained a National Diploma in Business Administration and Management, but eventually dropped out before the completion of his Higher National Diploma (HND).
Nevertheless 2Face went on to become the first African to win an MTV award in 2004 among countless other accolades.
2. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
Omotola Jalade is a graduate of the Yaba College of Technology where she studied Estate Management. She has since gone on to win millions of hearts across Africa, and indeed the world with her acting prowess.
In 2013, she was named one of Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People in the world.
3. Mercy Aigbe
With an upwards of 3 million followers on Instagram, Mercy Aigbe is one of the most influential actress in the Yoruba sector.
Asides her acting, Mercy, who nabbed an OND in Financial Studies from the Polytechnic Ibadan before getting a Theatre Arts degree from the University of Lagos, is an accomplished business woman with a chain of retail stores and brand endorsements under her belt.
4. Toyin Abraham
Also an alumnus of the Polytechnic Ibadan, Toyin has a HND in Marketing but has distinguished herself as an actress and producer of repute.
A Nigerian box-office darling, Toyin has produced and/or starred in a string of box office hits including Alaka, Alaka Reloaded and Okafor's Law to name a few.
5. Adekunle Gold
Adekunle Gold may be the newbie on the list, but he is by no means any less accomplished.
Dubbed the Photoshop king, Adekunle Gold has a HND in Arts and Design from the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) and has remained a chart topper since he burst onto the scene in 2014. With 2 albums to his name, he had a sold-out concert in Lagos in December, 2017.
He is also a brand ambassador for Unity Bank.
