5 Nigerian Artistes Making Waves Internationally
The Nigerian music industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Africa and the world at large.
Recently, Nigerian artistes have been riding high in the international music market and it gives one a sense of joy to know that foreigners appreciate the sounds which emanate from our shores.
Here are the major Nigerians doing their motherland proud and expanding the frontier of African music.
Ayo Balogun popularly known as Wizkid is arguably the biggest artiste in Africa at the moment.
His sold-out concerts and international collaborations are testament to this fact.
Wizkid is currently the poster boy of Nigerian music and his influence is such that his contemporaries aspire to reach his height.
A collaboration with one of the biggest artistes in the world presently, Drake on the Grammy nominated ''One Dance'' shot Wizkid to international status even though he had been doing other collaborations with other international artistes.
''Shabba'', a song which saw him feature Chris Brown, Trey Songz and French Montana, was another monster hit that the world got vibing to, not forgetting ''Ojuelegba'' remix and ''Come Closer'', songs that had US rapper Drake dropping some verses.
American website, hotnewhiphop said, “Expect WizKid to continue to be a refreshing voice on more star-studded hip-hop tracks in the near future. His movement is just beginning to take shape here in the U.S.”
Some of the famous artistes he has worked with include Drake, French Montana, Trey Songz, Tinie Tempah, Wale, Chris Brown, Kayla and Swizz Beatz.
Bad Boy CEO and rapper Diddy has been reported to be producing Wizkid’s forthcoming album.
If Wizkid is the Lionel Messi of the Nigerian music industry, David Adeleke aka Davido is most definitely the Cristiano Ronaldo.
Omo Baba Olowo (OBO) has paid his dues in the industry and it is no surprise that he is getting all the accolades both at home and internationally.
The CEO of Davido Music Worldwide recently added the 2018 BET International Act award to his ever-increasing award cabinet.
The Babcock university graduate has been releasing back-to-back hits since his 2012 single, ''Back When''.
Davido has also had his fair share of collaborations with international artistes, such as — Meek Mill, Trey Songz and Mafikizolo.
He has also been spotted hanging out with DJ Khaled, French Montana and Kent Jones — an indication of a possible collaboration in the works.
The icing on the cake for Davido, was his 2016 distribution deal with Sony, an international entertainment company.
3) Tiwa Savage
Tiwa Savage, first lady of Mavin Records, is arguably the most successful indigenous female artiste in Nigeria.
Despite entering the Nigerian music landscape on the back of penning hit songs for several American artistes and serving as back-up singer for others, such as George Michael, Mary J. Blige, Destiny’s Child, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and more, Tiwa Savage’s hunger for greatness is unrivaled.
That hunger has helped her cultivate a large fan base and a staunchly loyal following.
With hit songs like ''Kelekele Love'', ''Love Me'', ''Eminado'' and ''Malo'', and also the club anthems with her label mates, Tiwa has held sway at the top of the music food chain for over 5 years.
In spite of her marital crisis, the incredibly talented singer has continued to forge ahead, unwavering.
Her efforts were rewarded in July 2016 when Roc Nation — owned by American music mogul, Jay Z — added her to its roster.
4) Burna Boy
You cannot knock Burna Boys’s hustle as the artiste’ unique style has endeared him to a lot of music fans across the globe.
The artiste has a new international collaboration in the offing.
He is said to be recording a new song with international producers, Timbaland and Skrillex.
The singer recently released his ''Outside'' album which has been enjoying rave reviews, coupled with his achievement of landing the only feature on Fall Out Boy’s “Mania” album — which got to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The Atlantic Records signee is working on a new project which has led him to record with two of the most acclaimed music producers in the world: Timabaland and Skrillex.
Skrillex is known to have produced much of Justin Bieber’s “Purpose” album, which ended up landing an ‘Album of the Year’ Grammy nomination; while Timbaland enjoys a legendary status in the global music scene, with multiple award-winning credits.
5) Mr Eazi
Mr Eazi has become a household name in Nigeria, Ghana and other African countries.
Born Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Mr. Eazi launched his musical career in 2012 with the single "Pipi Dance."
A year later, he collaborated with UK-based DJ Juls on the track "Bankulize" (featuring Pappy Kojo).
The singer has enjoyed a successful career since the release of his ''Accra to Lagos EP''.
Apart from recording songs, he has also been signing deals internationally. In April, he signed a record deal with Mad Decent, a record label owned by DJ Diplo of Major Lazer.
He has now announced that he has secured a licensing deal with Columbia Records UK.
