5 Amazing Records Set By Birthday Boy Okocha
The first match of the World Cup was not played on August 14 neither was FIFA formed on that day but nonetheless, that unique date is special in football circles.
It is the day former Super Eagles captain and soccer legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha was born in 1973, and years after quitting the round leather game he is still being celebrated as one of the best to play the game at least from Africa.
As he celebrates another year today, Bounce Sports picks five of the milestones achieved by Okocha in his illustrious career.
While the likes of Osaze Odemwigie and Odion Ighalo have also enjoyed this moment, Okocha is the first Nigerian to win the Premier League Player of the Month in November 2003.
He won the Nigerian footballer of the year for seven years, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.
Okocha at a time was the most expensive African player having made £14 million on a move from Fenerbahce to Paris Saint German.
He made it to FIFA 100; a compilation of the best players ever.
Okocha is the only player to win the BBC African Footballer of the Year back-to-back, he did so in 2003 and 2004
He was also the 2004 African Cup of Nations: Golden Boot and the MVP Award Winner
