The latest story about the Lagos state government’s mega city dream is the construction of a flyover in Agege.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode says he wants to reduce the sufferings that arise from the traffic congestion in this neighbourhood.

So, they decided to construct the Pen Cinema Flyover to decongest the area.

He admitted that he has inconvenienced residents by the demolition that has taken place there and gave an assurance that it is temporary.

But while you worry about the inconvenience for the next 10 months, we feel there is need to look at another implication.

There will be more trucks on the currently available routes and this means there is a higher need for you to be careful.

So, we compiled a few tips to help you drive safe around those long heavy vehicles and avoid the risk of being involved in a collision.

1. Avoid driving directly in front of a truck.

This is for a simple reason. The driver of the truck is usually highly elevated, and their view of the front is usually limited to equally high vehicles except you create enough space.

So, if you must be in front of a truck, create a lot of space. Also, remember trucks require much longer stopping distances than your car.

2. Avoid driving closely on either side of the truck.

Again, these are also blind spots for the truck driver and you need to spend as little time as possible in these areas.

Also, make sure you can see the truck’s mirrors and use your horn without compromise.

3. Do not overtake trucks that are turning

Trucks and other large commercial vehicles make wide turns. Attempting to pass a turning truck puts you at an increased risk of being involved in a collision.

Don’t be in a hurry, they will do their bit and leave the road.

4. Obey Traffic Laws

You make yourself and others safer when you do not spring too many surprises on the road.

Follow regulations that guide road use, maintain a safe speed, do not overtake at bends and leave you phone till you stop.

Keep it simple and lawful and you will avoid accidents.
