3 Things Army Chief Says Will Stop Boko Haram
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, says Boko Haram insurgents in northeast Nigeria have been defeated.
He made the declaration on Sunday at a special service held in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to commemorate the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Addressing reporters at the end of the service held at St. Bartholomew’s Military Church, Maimalari Cantonment, Buratai, who was represented by Maj.-Gen. David Ahmadu, the Chief of Training and Operations, Army Headquarters, said the military has won the war against insurgency.
He revealed that the military has recorded successes in the intensified offensive.
The Army chief pledged the military's commitment to the restoration of peace to the region, but highlighted three things that must be done to sustain peace in the region.
1. Proper Moral Upbringing
Lack of morals seems to have caused the growth of the terrorist group which recruits young men from different communities as fighters offering them salaries.
He said lack of proper moral upbringing will expose children to bad elements who would in turn use them to foment troubles and disrupt peace in the society.
2. Obedience To Rule Of Law
Buratai said it is the responsibility of children to listen and obey their parents while adhering to the rule of law as stipulated in the nation's constitution.
"Character begins from home. If the children or the youth do not listen to their parents then there is problem."
Poor value system has contributed to the rise in insurgency in the northeast and this has been attributed to poor education or lack of education by most young men in the region.
Buratai believes mixing discipline with education will change the youths perception and value for life.
“The children must have something to give back by being disciplined, educated, try to behave well wherever they go and ensure they are not deceived by anyone to do what is bad.”
On the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the northeast, the Army chief highlighted that the terrorists have been defeated.
Buratai further stressed the commitments of the military to end insurgency and protect the nation’s territorial integrity.
Soldiers were urged to avoid being hoodwinked by self-seeking individuals who promote hate speech, and to remain dedicated and professional in the line of duty.
Also, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas, said troops have recorded significant success in various operations against the insurgents in Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad basin.
Nicholas assured Nigerians that the counter-insurgency campaign would soon be concluded.
