3 Policemen Dismissed In Lagos Over Reckless Shooting
When there are repercussions for indiscipline and recklessness in the police, there is surely going to be sanity.
Three policemen attached to Amukoko Division in Lagos state have been made scape goats by the Lagos Command to send a signal to others who like to misbehave when they have guns.
The trio of Sgt. Osaseri Saturday with service number 25759, Sgt. Segun Okun, 359075; and Cpl. Adekunle Oluwarotimi, 496833 have been tried and dismissed from the Nigeria Police for breaching the rules of engagement which is reckless application of firearms.
The three Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), committed the offence on Thursday, January 11, 2017, around 9.30pm, at Ifelodun street, Amukoko, Lagos state.
They disproportionately responded with bullets fired from their weapons at some youths alleged to have hurled some non-ballistic missiles at them such as stones, sticks and bottles leading to the death of one of the youths and injury on another.
They were arrested, detained and tried immediately on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos state, CP Edgal Imohimi.
The guilty verdict was passed on them by the adjudicating officer who considered that the officers did not appraise the situation critically and ought not to have applied the maximum force on the unruly youths.
Meanwhile the officers will be charged to court in the coming week, while a duplicate copy of the casefile would be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
With this, the Commissioner of Police no longer needs to warn his men against misapplication of force.
Those who are wise will always do the right thing.
