Three persons were feared dead during a shoot-out between operatives of Nigeria Customs Service and a group of car smugglers in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital

It is understood that other people were also injured in the shoot-out which happened at Denro, near Alamala Army Barracks.

During the shooting, one of the vehicles being smuggled crashed into a passenger bus, which in turn hit a car; resulting in two persons feared dead on the spot

Those feared dead were immediately taken by other passengers in the bus back to Ayetoro, while one of those injured died at the state hospital, Ijaye-Abeokuta.

Spokesman of the State Customs Command, Abdullahi Maiwada, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, says the smugglers had been exchanging gunshots with the officers in the Customs patrol team, tracking them from Ayetoro

On arrival at Denro, near the army barracks, gunshots by the Customs who were attempting to intercept the smugglers, hit one of the smuggled vehicles

The Customs spokesman gave assurances that the incident is being investigated by the command, while appealing to the public not to launch reprisal attacks against Customs operatives.
