Who breaks into a shop to steal when the shop owner is there? Call it miscalculation but some would call it stupidity.

On May 6 at No. 13, Brown Road, Aguda, Lagos, Qudus Adeshina (28) allegedly broke into a shop belonging to Melody Ibonye, through the ceiling to steal.

“When he discovered that the complainant was in the shop, he tried to escape but was caught by some neighbours after he (complainant) raised alarm.”

This was Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko’s narrative when the accused appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

He added that the shop owner, Ibonye has also claimed that his damaged ceiling board is worth 85,000 naira.

Adeshina is ‎facing a two-count charge of burglary and malicious damage. ‎

The offences contravene Sections 307 and 338 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) and Section 307 stipulates a seven-year jail term for offenders.

After pleading 'not guilty', the Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul, granted Adesina bail in the sum of 100,000 naira and asked him to provide one surety as part of the bail condition.

‎Mr Paul said that the surety, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, must also have a gainful employment and should deposit 50,000 naira in the court’s registrar’s account. ‎

‎The magistrate adjourned the case until June 6 for mention.
