Dramatic must be one of the best words to describe the 2019 presidential debate that held on Saturday in Abuja.

APC’s President Muhammadu Buhari refused to show up, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the PDP showed up but walked out refusing to debate.

As expected, their drama overshadowed the major issues debated upon by the trio of Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Dr. Kingsley Moghalu and Mr Fela Durotoye.

The true story is that Atiku was not willing to go into a debate that did not have the president present as he believes his debate is about the failure of the current administration.

As he made his way out of the venue, journalists bombarded him with questions as to the wisdom in his decision considering many Nigerians were watching to understand his plans.

According to Atiku, there was no point participating in the debate if the man in charge of affairs in the present administration is not present.

The Director General of his campaign and Senate President Bukola Saraki also spoke about their candidate’s decision to boycott the debate after arriving the venue.

“The candidate has spoken. We have always made it clear to the organisers that our candidate is going to debate Mr President.

“When we were told in Washington that he will be here, we cut our trip short to come here but he is not here.

“Our candidate is available to debate the president anytime and on short notice; we have shown that commitment here,” he said.

The presidential debate was organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON).
