Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the United States of America has again reassured Nigeria of its support in conducting credible polls.

The US made the pledged through its Consul General in Lagos, F. John Bray.

Bray who, spoke on the theme, “Media and Transparency of the 2019 Elections,” at the event marking the World Press Freedom Day, tasked journalists on delivering objective and balanced reporting during the elections.

Bray said: “As the 2019 election draws near, the U.S. Mission supports your efforts to provide objective and balanced reporting to the Nigerian people".

Due to the important role the media is expected to play in the electoral process, Bray stated that the US Consulate Public Affairs team in Lagos led by Darcy Zotter is putting together an election reporting training for 100 political reporters and editors.

He said this will help reporters to further understand their huge responsibility of reporting accurately on elections and electoral processes.

In his view, Bray said that "when people don’t have the facts, they make them up and that creates unstable environments, rife with rumours, gossip and lies".
