The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it will conduct  the February 16 and March 2 elections as scheduled in its timetable in Rivers State.

The electoral body also said that elections would be contested only by political parties and candidates whose names were published by the commission on January 17, 2019, and those whose names would be published on January 31, 2019.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Education and Publicity, Festus Okoye, made it known that the conditions for the postponement of any election does not exist in Rivers State

The commission was responding to the allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that INEC plans to accommodate the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections in Rivers State.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission acts on the basis of existing facts. The facts on the ground as of today is that the Federal High Court Porthacourt Judicial division, delivered two judgments and said that the APC will not participate in the elections and that the logo of the APC or any of the candidates of the APC will not appear on the ballot papers on election day and INEC has fully complied with this particular directive.

"The election will, therefore, be conducted on the basis of the political parties and candidates that emerged through valid party primary elections and whose names have been published by the commission,” he said.

Okoye noted that the commission has consistently maintained that it is a constitutional body and would obey and comply with orders and judgments from properly constituted courts of law.

He added, “Similarly, the party will not feature in the ballot papers and other documents and materials released or to be used for the conduct of the listed strands of elections.''

He said the court did not order the commission to postpone any election on account of the orders given and the INEC has no intention of postponing the 2019 general elections in Rivers State or in any other part of Nigeria.

"The commission will, therefore, conduct elections in Rivers State on February 16 and March 2 2019 for candidates and political parties qualified to contest the election.”
