A major upset may have hit the presidential campaign of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar as the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike resigned his appointment as the south South zonal coordinator of the campaign.

The Rivers governor was in October named zonal coordinator along side Governors Ayo Fayose (South-West), Aminu Tambuwal (North-West), Ibrahim Dankwambo (North-East), Samuel Ortom (North- Central), and Dave Umahi (South-East) with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council.

Wike, who supported Tambuwal during the presidential primary, had claimed that he was being sidelined in the campaign council.

It was gathered that Wike was angered by the way vital decisions and appointments were carried out without consultations of party leaders.

Atiku was alleged to have struck a deal with some prominent South-East and South- South politicians, amongst them, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, as likely running mate if they supported him to emerge the party’s candidate.

But in the wake of his emergence, he was accused of settling for Obi without as much consulting with other critical stakeholders in the party, particularly those of the South-East and South-South extractions.

But indications showed that Wike was angry because he has been isolated in the scheme of things.

Instead of being on the driver’s seat like the case before the National Convention, the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, and the National Working Committee (NWC) defer more to Atiku, the National Leader of the party, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson who was one of the arrowheads of Atiku’s victory at the party’s convention.

It was learnt that unlike pre-convention era, the party leadership does not rely on Wike for funds any more.

The sudden financial independence of the party, through alternative sources has made Wike to know little of developments in PDP.

It was learnt that governors, ex-ministers and top leaders of the party have been begging the governor to rescind his decision.

Obasanjo and the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, have agreed to intervene in the crisis rocking the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

The two men would engage different stakeholders who felt agreed following the composition of the party’s presidential campaign council.

The national leadership of the party and Atiku have also spoken with the governor to rescind the decision.

As a follow up, the party and Atiku were said to have asked Tambuwal to visit Wike and convince him on the need to work together with the party for the general elections.

The source said that Obasanjo would also speak with some other aggrieved members of the party, especially from the North.

Obasanjo, it was gathered, had agreed to meet with the aggrieved persons in Abuja this week.
