Final list of candidates for the governorship, House of Assembly and FCT area council elections will be out today, January 31, 2019, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said.

The planned release of the candidate's list was announced by the chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

He said it would be published in all the state offices of the commission across Nigeria and on the commission’s website.

Professor Yakubu hinted reporters of the planned publication of the final list at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Resident Electoral Commissioner in Bayelsa State, Monday Udo, held on Wednesday.

"On the whole, there are 1,066 candidates for the Governorship elections, 14,583 for the State Assembly elections and 806 for the FCT Area Council elections broken down into 105 Chairmanship candidates and 701 Councillorship candidates."

It also pointed out that the crisis in Zamfara State, affecting the fielding of a candidate by the All Progressives Congress (APC), is at a stand still position as a result of two court judgements.

It said since the two judgements of the courts in Zamfara and Abuja contradicted each other, it would maintain its position that the party in question did not conduct primaries and, therefore, in line with Section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), is not eligible to field candidates for the National Assembly, Governorship and State Assembly elections in Zamfara State.
