2019: Buhari's In-Law Joins Adamawa Governorship Race In APC
Dr. Mahmoud Halilu Ahmed, younger brother of Aisha Buhari, who is best known as Modi, has joined the governorship race in Adamawa State.
Ahmed with his governorship ambition wants to unseat Governor Jibrilla Bindow.
The First Lady’s brother who is from Adamawa North Senatorial District is learnt to be adamant and resilient about his ambition.
Modi in a letter to the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said: "I am proposing to have a formal declaration of my candidacy as a gubernatorial aspirant of the APC on the 10th of September, 2018 at 12 noon in Yola.
“Following the desire of our great party to open the political space for mass participation and our great party's effort to offer a level playing field for free, fair and credible elections, I wish to formally inform you of my intention to contest for the office of the Executive Governor of Adamawa State in the 2019 General Elections under APC.”
Modi explained that he was joining the governorship race because he was driven by "patriotism to tackle the challenges facing the state, including the general wellbeing of our people”.
Modi's decision to run in 2019 will significantly alter the permutations.
Stakeholders are said to be opposed to Ahmed who is relying on powerful forces in Abuja to clinch the ticket.
It was unclear whether the First Lady had given her blessing to Modi whose intimidating electronic bill boards have flooded Yola.
If Modi gets the ticket, Bindow, who is in control of the party’s structure, may have to use another party to seek re-election in 2019.
But apart from Bindow, the First Lady’s brother has to vie for the governorship slot with a former governorship candidate, Marcus Nada Gundiri, a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, and Senator Ahmad Abubakar Mo’Allahyidi.
Ahmed is the Chairman Board Of Directors, Hinterland Group (Financiers, Real Estate Investment, Hospitality, Forex Trading and Corporate Support Services) as well as Bedmod Farms Nigeria Limited.
