Journalists must always remember the need to do thorough investigation on any issue before publishing it.

The Deputy Governor of Oyo State Otunba Moses Adeyemo gave this warning on Thursday at a public lecture organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists Oyo State Information Chapel (NUJIC).

He reminded the journalists present that the media has a major role to play in the success of the 2019 elections and the total development of the country.

Therefore, they must decide to be responsible citizens in their discharge of the journalism profession.

Mr Adeyemo decried the influence of social media on the society and the rate at which fake news is quickly spread on the platforms.

He warned that professionals cannot afford to join the social media bandwagon. They must resist the pressure to share unconfirmed information no matter how juicy they seem.

"Journalists must be honest in their dealings. Don't give us figures that can cause chaos. Journalist must do investigation before putting it in the papers, do your research well before publishing." he said.

The lecture was tagged ‘2019: INEC, Politicians, Media and The Quest For Credible Election’ and it took place at the Western Hall, House of Assembly complex in Ibadan.

Mr. Toye Arulogun who is the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism was present alongside, notable persons like Mogaji Akin Alabi, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, Mr. Abimbola Adekanbi and others.
