2019: Atiku Formally Declares For President On Saturday
After months of consultations within his party, the PDP (PDP) and across Nigeria, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, will on Saturday (today), formally declare to contest the 2019 presidential election.
A press release from the media office of the former Vice President stated that Atiku will be making his declaration at a political rally in Yola, the capital of his home state of Adamawa.
Atiku, who returned to the PDP, the party which gave him the chance to serve as Vice President, has since made know his intention to seek the top seat, a position he has sought since 2007.
He will be contesting for the PDP presidential ticket against some heavy weights including: Sule Lamido (Jigawa) Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna) Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) and Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto).
Other aspirants under the PDP are former Minister for Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.
According to the press release, Atiku’s decision to join the presidential race in 2019 is in response to the yearnings of majority of Nigerians.
“After extensive consultations with his family, Nigerians of diverse dispensations at home and abroad, Atiku Abubakar has decided to make a formal bid for the 2019 presidential election race under the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)” the statement said.
In the last few weeks, Atiku’s nationwide tour had taken him to Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ebonyi, Abia, Borno, Taraba, Sokoto, Kaduna and Adamawa States, among others, in pursuit of this project.
Dignitaries expected at the grand rally include the National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, Members of the National Working Committee of the PDP; Members of the Board of Trustees; Governors of PDP-controlled states, former Governors, members of the National Assembly, as well as other national and zonal party leaders.
