2019: Ambode Fights Back, Refuses To Step Down For Sanwo-Olu
Pressure continues to mount on Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode to back down on his second term as All Progressives Congress national leader Ahmed Tinubu refused to change his mind on his preferred candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
But the Lagos number one citizen is ready to give it a fight instead of just bow to pressure.
Ambode is set to let the polls decide and may now contest with Sanwo-Olu in the APC primaries.
There are reports that the chairmen of the 57 councils had already declared support for Sanwo-Olu, but that will not deter the incumbent governor.
According to a source who spoke with Punch, as a way of pressurizing him to drop his second term ambition, Ambode was promised ministerial appointment but he turned it down.
“Ambode was told to step down and forget his second term ambition. He was told to publicly endorse Sanwo-Olu as his successor. He was promised a ministerial appointment after the APC might have won the presidential election. He was even told to pick a ministry of his choice.
“But Ambode seemed not to be pleased with the directives of the leaders as he declined the ministerial dangle. He also told them to allow the APC primary process to continue as planned. For now, the meeting is still continuing and there is no compromise in sight.”
Many dignitaries have waded in to save the face of Ambode, but Tinubu appeared to have already made up his mind on his anointed candidate.
