At a time South Africa are looking to have their very best available to face high-flying Super Eagles of Nigeria in Saturday's AFCON qualifiers, they have been hit with an injury concern.

Thulani Serero, who was previously blacklisted from the national team but recalled for the mission against Nigeria, is in a race against time.

The Vitesse Arnhem midfielder has picked up an injury which may leave him sidelined for a few days.

The midfielder had won the second-most number of ‘duels’ in the Dutch league this season ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

With no Dean Furman‚ Kamohelo Mokotjo or Bongani Zungu due to injury‚ he was almost certain to be included in the starting line up.

He has featured in 44 of the club’s 45 Dutch league games since he joined at the start of the 2017/18 campaign‚ and started every one this season before the 2-1 win over Utrecht.

Serero has arrived in the Bafana camp with what the team management described on the SAFA website as a “slight injury”.

He trained on his own on Monday at Steyn City in Johannesburg, but medics are hopeful he will join the rest of the team on Tuesday.

It is yet to be seen if 27-year-old Serero will win the fitness battle and would be ready to play against Nigeria in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium.

Aside from Serero, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is also under close watch by the medics.
