Twice beaten - the prodigal son walks away again.

The Malian Football Federation announced on Thursday that coach Alain Giresse has resigned.

Giresse took a walk after it was obvious he will not secure Mali a 2018 World Cup ticket.

Mali has just two points from four matches, with Ivory Coast topping the group on seven points. Only one team qualifies from each African group.

Mali suffered a 6-0 bashing in Morocco on Saturday and was forced to a goalless draw in the return leg played on Tuesday, a situation that left them rooted bottom of Group C and possibly dashed their chance of qualification.

"It was becoming too difficult," the 65-year-old former French international midfielder told AFP.

"The disappointment is not so much sporting as it is born from misunderstanding. This team cannot achieve its goals."

Giresse was in his second spell in charge of Mali, having first led the side from 2010-2012, before returning in 2015.
