Messi will lead Argentina to battle as they seek to revive hopes of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Argentina take on Ecuador on Tuesday at the Quito's Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa aiming to avoid a humiliating failure to qualify for the 2018 finals.

Argentina, 2014 finalist, head into the final round of South American qualifiers in sixth place.

They are outside the top four positions which grant automatic qualification and trail fifth-placed Peru, who occupy the playoff spot, on goal difference.

Nothing but all three points against Ecuador, will make things easy for the two-time champions to join the likes of Spain, Germany, Nigeria and Egypt who have already qualified for Russia 2018.

Only two points is separating third-placed Chile (26 points) with seventh-placed Paraguay (24).

Victory for Argentina on Tuesday would guarantee they finish no worse than fifth place, putting them into a two-leg play-off against New Zealand.
