At least 12 of the bandits that unleashed mayhem on communities in Nigeria's north western region have been killed.

They had infiltrated Kaduna State and were at a village market to restock food materials and other items when they were killed, a statement by a spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, stated.

The bandits were killed by troops from 1 Division in Kaduna on Thursday in an operation conducted in Kidandan, Maidaro and Sabon Fili villages.

After the army received a tip off, troops and vigilante groups infiltrated the market on clandestine operation to identify the bandits.

“A few hours later on appearance of other uniformed troops to arrest the identified bandits, serious fire fight ensued between troops and the fleeing bandits.

“In the process, due to superior fire power of our own troops, 12 of the fleeing bandits were neutralised," Chukwu said.

The troops also recovered 32 motorcycles, five handsets and 9,135 Naira cash from the bandits.
