A clash between men of the Nigerian Police and some illegal miners has left 10 civilians dead.

The incident happened in Mambilla, Taraba State.

According to an eye witness, Hammadu Bello who spoke to AP on Friday, police tried to dislodge the miners in the Mayo Sine area on Thursday, destroying temporary living structures set up on land allocated to a mining company.

Another resident, Joseph Kataps, says the miners retaliated and attacked the police, who opened fire.

Police spokesman David Misal confirmed that illegal miners attacked police in Mambilla but said no further details were immediately available.

Some 10,000 illegal miners operate on lands designated for mining companies in the area.
